SomeInklings...

If there is a certain exam apt to distinguish those students of English major(or dual major) from non-English majors, I think AW might be an ideal touchstone. With much emphasis on the knowledge background and critical thinking, the required essay is quite academic in terms of the style and structure while the language ability may take a back seat. I found it a hard job to rationally explain the event or series of events in a logic manner at the very beginning and inclined to frown at the topic like "the absence of choice is circumstance that is rare, very rare" , "the arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society" , and so forth.

As to me, the bittersweet experience of preparing for AW is a pressure-driven and self-motivated process. At least I am now quite familiar with the spelling of Copernicus, Hawking, Mahatma Gandhi, to name a few. In the course of preparation, I found some evidence cited in model essays is indicative of Americans’ preference and judgment of historical figures which often reminds me that the test is created and evaluated by Americans although it is assured no bias or prejudice among Readers. The problem is that sometimes our understanding of a certain word may depart from that of Americans such as “humanity” “authority” respecting very ambiguous and broad concepts. And Americans’ self-superiority is best revealed in their accolade of laissez-faire and skepticism of centralization system and therefore, sometimes we have to cite received and worldwide examples familiar to them instead of those with national characteristic.

In addition, in my observation the pool covers a wide range of areas and those concerning sociology and liberal arts are especially nail-biting for test takers. When we dwell on the necessities of saving money(the topic for Writing of TEM4,2006), the topics such as "nature and nurture","existence and essence","individuality and conformity" are cynosures among American people and students are encouraged to present their points of view on the issues. Is that because most of us are lacking in the keen observation of society and people around us or a sense of mission?

Admittedly, without consistent practice this transient feeling for writing and expression is easy to wane. The awkward situation will be compounded by my laziness and passiveness just as I'm killing time at the moment. AW civilized me and cultualized me but it's gone. What's the new driving force to bridge the gap? Have some faith.

farewell to winter vacation
